From the Editor
We changed how the world writes about Africa.
Africa Travel Magazine was launched in 1995 by Jerry W. Bird and Margarete Göttgrau, in partnership with Nina Bennett, then Executive Director of the Africa Travel Association, and Kathi Buffington of the Bradford Group in New York.
The founders believed the magazine should amplify African voices and replace outdated narratives with informed reporting from across the continent.
Thirty years on, the publication continues to document the industry, connecting destinations, languages, and communities across Africa.
We prefer articles of substance and long-term interest, rather than the passing parade. That is why our back issues become keepers.

A Trade publication, not a tourist guide.
Where consumer travel titles chase individual itineraries, we serve the professionals who shape the industry — tour operators, government ministries, and delegates who decide where African tourism goes next.

Builingual Since Day 1
Published in English and French
The bilingual format launched with the first issue in 1995 — spearheaded by our Associate Publisher Muguette Goufrani, a former travel agent, tour operator, and shipping agent whose career spans Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, France, Tahiti, and New Caledonia.
The decision opened francophone West and North Africa immediately. Today it reaches French-speaking readers across Europe, Québec, the Caribbean, Réunion, French Polynesia, and the wider African diaspora — a distinct advantage over English-only competitors.
